It is the only member of the genus Panterpe. This is a common to abundant bird of montane forest canopy above 1400 m, and also occurs in scrub at the woodland edges and clearings. This bird is about 4.3 inches long (11 cm) and weighs a mere .02 ounces (5.7 grams) The sexes are similar, but young birds have rufous fringes to the head plumage. The call is a high-pitched twittering. The female is entirely responsible for nest building and incubation. Artist’s notes:
The Fiery-Throated Hummingbird was completed on 8.27.2013. I’m putting together a collage of animals found in the Monte Verde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica – which I visited a few years ago. I remember waiting to go back onto the local bus, watching in amazement at the various lovely and brightly colored hummingbirds that swarmed around the feeders which were nearby. I knew when I made an illustration homage to Monte Verde I would have to include at least one of the species of hummingbirds found there. After going over several of the native species I settled on this gorgeous jewel of a bird.
