The Florida Horse Conch (Latin name Triplofusus giganteus but at one time referred to as Pleuroploca gigantic) is a very large gastropod native to the warm coastal waters of North America from North Carolina south to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. It is the largest gastropods in the Americas, and one of the largest univalves on the planet, with a shell that can reach 24 inches (60 centimeters.) While not a “true” conch, is is like some of the genus of Strombus a predatory sea snail. When the snail is smaller the coloration of the shell is quite vivid and bright, but this coloration tends to fade as the animal ages, with the shell becoming more gray and white. The snail is commonly found in weed and mud flats from the low intertidal to shallow subtidal zones, usually in about 20 feet or water (6 meters.) It is the official shell of the state of Florida in the US.
