Information about the Greater Spotted Eagle:
The Greater Spotted Eagle is a large bird of prey, being about 23–28 inches long (59–71 cm) with a wingspan of 5.15–5.87 feet (157–179 cm). They are native to the wooded areas of northern Europe eastwards across Asia, and winters in south-eastern Europe, north-eastern Africa, the Middle East and southern Asia. Like other eagles, the Spotted Eagle hunts for prey – usually small mammals, birds and reptiles – from the air swooping down on them and grabbing with their razor sharp claws. Due to habitat loss and illegal hunting this species has been declared vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN.

Artist’s notes:
The Greater Spotted Eagle was completed on 10.24.2014. There are dozens of amazing species of eagles in the world, and I hope to one day complete all the extant species. But for now I’m happy to draw some of them, and put them into a collage that celebrates this amazing bird of prey.
