Hawaiian Monk Seal – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Hawaiian Monk Seal:
The Hawaiian Monk Seal is a critically endangered marine mammal native to the the Hawaiian Islands. It is a member of the Phocidae family, which are the earless and “true” seals. There is only one other species of Monk Seal – the Mediterranean Monk Seal. Adult males of the species grow to weigh about 300 to 400 pounds (140 to 180 kilograms) and have a length of roughly 7 feet (2.1 meters) Females are generally somewhat larger – 400 to 600 pounds (180 to 270 kilograms) and 8 feet (2.4 meters) long. There are only an estimated 1,100 individuals in the wild, and because of this number – along with the fact there are very low levels of genetic variations – there are very aggressive conservation efforts being made in order to save the species from extinction. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is the official state mammal of Hawaii.

Artist’s notes:
The Hawaiian Monk Seal was completed on 6.29.2012. I’ve been fortunate to be able to travel to Hawaii several times. The first time I took my fiancee, we stayed on the west coast of Maui. When we arrived at out hotel, we noticed a crowd on the beach. There, pulled up onto the sand, was a Monk Seal. It set a great tone for the trip, and I felt very lucky to see one of these very rare animals.
