Information about the Jefferson’s Ground Sloth:

The Jefferson’s Ground Sloth is an extinct mammal that was native to much of the North American continent. IT is believed to have lived from roughly 15,000 BP to 10,000 BCE. It is one of several species of giant sloth that roamed both North and South America, until a series of environmental pressures forced all but a few species into extinction. The name “Megalonyx” was suggested by Thomas Jefferson, who would eventually become the president of the US. Jefferson’s Ground Sloth grew to be 8 to 10 feet long (2.5–3 meters) and had the widest range of the extinct giant sloths.

The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:
• Paper thickness: 10.3 mil
• Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²)
• Opacity: 94%

Description

Fine art illustration of a Jefferson’s Ground Sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii.) The illustration is available in black and white or color.

The Jefferson’s Ground Sloth was completed on 6.8.2012. I hadn’t drawn an extinct mammal for about two years, but the fact that the state of West Virginia chose this animal as their state fossil meant that if I was to complete the 50 State Project I’d have to render one. Luckily, with the great help of my friend Carl Buell (a fantastic paleoartist who provided the foundational sketch for this drawing) I was able to complete an illustration of one.
