Information about the Sea Clown Triopha:

The Sea Clown Triopha is a member of the Polyceridae, which are a family of sea slugs, dorid nudibranchs, marine gastropod mollusks within the superfamily Polyceroidea. They are fairly small – and only grow to about 3.1 inches long (80mm) They are native to the cooler coastal waters of the Eastern Pacific from Alaska to Mexico, although it has also been found in Japan and South Korea. It is named for the island of Santa Catalina off the coast of California in the US.

Artist’s notes:

The Sea Clown Triopha was completed on 10.19.2013. As the years roll by, I find myself drawing more and more esoteric and obscure animals. It seems like, as I approach 1000 drawings completed, there are less large land animals, commonly seen birds and so forth left to draw (although with over a million species identified I’m not in much danger to run out!) So, with my love of tide pool animals, I turn to the smaller word. The Sea Clown is barely an inch long, but it to me is no less worthy a subject to draw than any tiger, rhino or eagle. The drawing is based on a photo by Gary McDonald was used with his permission.
