Information about the Wood Stork:
The Wood Stork is a large wading bird of the order Ciconiiformes. Adult storks are about 33-45 inches tall and have about a 58-71 inch wingspan. The Wood Stork is a sub-tropical species that can be found in South America, Central America and the Caribbean. It is the only stork in North America and a small population lives in the southeastern part of the US and is considered endangered. The Wood Stork feed in shallow waters foraging for frogs, fish, large insects and reptiles.

Artist’s notes:
The Wood Stork was completed on 7/8/2009. These birds are simply amazing looking, and perhaps one of the best examples of the idea that birds are today’s decedents of the dinosaurs. Its head and beak seem so primitive looking to me. The drawing is based on a photo by Jay Paredes
