Information about the Great-Crested Newt:
Great-Crested newt – also called the Northern Crested or Warty Newt – is native to marshy, damp areas near ponds and slow moving streams from Great Britain and Brittany in the west across much of Europe north of the Alps and the Black Sea. There are three recognized sub-species. While they are not considered endangered, their numbers have dropped in recent decades due to pollution and habitat loss. Because of this decline the newt in now protected throughout much of it’s range and it is illegal to capture or harm them or disturb the habitat in which it lives. Adult newts grow to be about 6-6.5 inches long (12-16 cm.)

Artist’s notes:
The Great-Crested Newt or Northern Crested Newt was completed on 1.9.2014. A few months ago I decided to make a collage of the world’s newt. There are so many amazing and beautiful species to choose from. I knew that one of the more iconic species – the Great Crested Newt – had to be part of it. I found a great reference photo by Rainer Theuer who had released the image into the public domain via WikiPedia. I will be drawing a few more newts before the collage is ready.
