It is a subspecies of Boisduval’s Blue (Aricia icarioides). The endangered Mission Blue has a wingspan of about 21–33 millimeters (0.83–1.3 in). The Mission Blue depends on a very specific host plant called the lupine. As such, its habitat is restricted solely to the U.S. state of California. More specifically, it is limited to a range of five known areas where Mission Blue colonies have been confirmed. Those areas are subject to a range of conservation and habitat restoration action.

Artist’s notes:
The Mission Blue Butterfly was completed in the summer/fall of 2015. For my show at the Lindsay Wildlife Experience I put together five different collage celebrating the National Parks of California. For the Bay Area I selected the Golden Gate National Recreational Area and wanted to include an iconic butterfly and selected the Mission Blue.
