Information about the Red Deer:
The Red Deer is one the largest and most widespread of all the species of deer. It can be found in much of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains, Asia, and parts of western and central Asia, as well as northwestern Africa (it is the only species of deer to inhabit that continent.) It has been introduced into several areas where it’s not native to, such as Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. It is a very popular animal to hunt and has been a game animal and source of meat for many hundreds of years. The Red Deer is the fourth largest species of deer behind the moose, elk and sambar deer. Adult males are generally about 69 to 91 inches long 175 to 230 cm) long and weighs 350 to 530 pounds (160 to 240 kg) In some areas, such as the UK, the Red Deer was hunted to near extinction. But aggressive programs to preserve the species has helped bring their numbers back up and there are many healthy populations now thriving in the wild.

Artist’s notes:
The Red Deer was completed on 4.4.2013. I’m putting together a collection of animals native to the UK, and I couldn’t imagine that group of animals not including the majestic Red Deer. I’m slowing working my way through all extant species of deer, and seeing as the Red Deer is one of the most widespread species I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to complete an illustration of this wonderful ungulate. The drawing is based on a photo by A.J. Havercamp of the Netherlands.

The Margay is a smaller member of the feline family. It is native to southern North America, down through much of Central America and most of South America. Like many other species of cat, the Margay is a solitary hunter. It prefers remote sections of very dense tropical and subtropical rainforests and cloudforests. It looks similar to the Ocelot, but the head is a little smaller with longer legs and tail. The cat weighs from 5.7 to 8.8 pounds (2.6 to 4 kilograms), with a body length of 19 to 31 inches (48 to 79 centimeters), and a tail length of 13 to 20 in (33 to 51 centimeters.)
