Information about the White-Throated Kingfisher:

The White-Throated Kingfisher also called the white-breasted kingfisher or Smyrna kingfisher, is widely distributed in Asia from Turkey, east through the Indian subcontinent to the Philippines. This kingfisher is a resident over much of its range, although some populations may make short distance movements. It can often be found well away from water where it feeds on a wide range of prey that includes small reptiles, amphibians, crabs, small rodents and even birds. During the breeding season they call loudly in the mornings from prominent perches including the tops of buildings in urban areas or on wires.

Artist’s notes:

The White-Throated Kingfisher was completed in the summer/fall of 2015. I had been creating drawings to put into a collage of kingfishers, and when I was looking for species to add I found this lovely bird. While I’m partial to the North American species, I love the kingfishers of the tropics – they’re so colorful! The drawing is based on a photo by Eyal Bartov and was used with permission.
