Willet – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Willet:
The Willet is a large shorebird in the sandpiper family. It is the largest of the shanks (which are a genus of wading birds). Adults have gray legs and a long, straight, dark and stout bill. The body is dark gray above and light underneath. This bird winters on the Atlantic coast of South America. The Western Willet breeds in freshwater prairie marshes in western North America. It winters on both coasts, from the mid-Atlantic states south to at least Brazil on the Atlantic, and from Oregon south to Peru and Chile on the Pacific. Willets nest on the ground, usually in well-hidden locations in short grass, often in colonies. These birds forage on mudflats or in shallow water, probing or picking up food by sight. They mainly eat insects, crustaceans and marine worms, but also eat some plant material. The Willet’s population declined sharply due to hunting in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Their population has since increased, but they are still considered at risk, especially in light of continued habitat loss.

Artist’s notes:
The Willet was completed on 1.29.2014. Just a few days ago I took a ride on the San Francisco Bay in my friend’s new boat. It is a great place to birdwatch, and my friend and I spent a lovely afternoon, binoculars in hand, watching all the wonderful wildlife. At one point a group of birds flew past, and I realized that it was a group of Willets, which I had considered drawing some time ago but had tabled for some reason. I went back over my reference photos and found a great image taken by Ron Wolf, who graciously allowed me to use it to create this drawing.
