Great Grey Shrike – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Northern Shrike:
The Northern Shrike – also called the Great Grey Shrike or Northern Grey Shrike – is a large songbird native to much of the northern hemisphere. It can be found most temperate and subarctic regions in North America, Asia and Europe usually north of 50 degrees latitude. There are several sub-species scattered throughout much of the bird’s range. While the Northern Shrike isn’t considered endangered, some of these sub-species are through habitat loss. In general these birds are on the larger size, being 8.7 to 10 inches long (22 to 26 cm) and weighing around 2.1 to 2.5 oz (60 to 70 g.) They are formidable hunters, feeding on larger invertebrates and smaller vertebrates. They have the curious habit of skewering their prey onto thorns or man-made objects like barbed wire in order to help hold it in place to eat
The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:
• Paper thickness: 10.3 mil
• Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²)

Artist’s notes:
The Great Grey or Northern Shrike illustration was completed on 1.13.2013. I’ve been meaning to draw a shrike for some time. They are such interesting and lovely songbirds. Again, it can be difficult drawing a mostly white subject with a black medium (ink) but there is enough variation in the coloration of the bird that it makes for a good species to draw regardless. The drawing is based on a photo by and was used with permission.
