Information about the Snowy Egret:
The Snowy Egret, also sometimes called the plumed egret, is a smaller heron of the order of Pelecaniformes. These graceful wading birds are common in sloughs, estuaries, shallow slow moving streams, lakes, coastal wetlands, marshes throughout North America. They are also commonly found in urban areas as well as cities as long as there is a food source for them. They are opportunistic feeders and will eat amphibians, small invertebrates, reptiles and fish. They birds will slowly move through shallow waters, plumbing the muck hoping to scare up prey. They will also stand still and ambush prey.

Artist’s notes:
The Snowy Egret was completed on 7.25.2011. One by one I’m completing drawing of the various birds I see on an average day in the Bay Area. Snowy Egrets are pretty common around here, but I still thrill to see one in flight when they take off or zoom overhead. For that reason I chose to show the bird in flight rather than perched or hunting for food. The drawing is based on a photo by the talented wildlife photographer Hank Halsey.
