Southern Cassowary – Signed Fine Art Print
$19.95 – $27.95
Information about the Southern Cassowary:
The Southern Cassowary – also called the Double-wattled Cassowary, Australian Cassowary or Two-wattled Cassowary – is a large flightless black bird. It is closely related to the Emu, Ostrich, and the genus Rhea. (See also Dwarf Cassowary and Northern Cassowary.) It is technically the largest Asian bird (since the extinction of the Arabian Ostrich, and previously the Moa of New Zealand) Due to ongoing habitat loss, limited range, and overhunting in some areas, the Southern Cassowary is evaluated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The Australian population is listed as Endangered under Federal and Queensland State legislation. It is second heaviest bird on earth, at a maximum size estimated at 200 pounds (85 kg.)
The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality:
• Paper thickness: 10.3 mil
• Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²)
• Opacity: 94%

Artist’s notes:
The Southern Cassowary was completed on 1.15.2014. I originally found a great reference photo (by Jean Chatallot who gave me permission to use it) for a Southern Cassowary about five years ago. Since then I have revisited the subject several times, but never gotten around to actually completing a drawing of this impressive bird. I finally found the inspiration to get started on a drawing about a week ago. In the past the dark feathers and areas of black would have dissuaded me from even starting the drawing. But I’ve developed new techniques that have helped speed up the process.
