Information about the Leafy Sea Dragon:
The Leafy Sea Dragon is a marine fish related to the seahorse. It is the only member of the genus Phycodurus. These creatures are found around southern and western Australia and generally remain in shallow, temperate waters. Their name comes from their appearance, with long leaf-like protrusions coming from all over the body. It has a long tubular snout, a pectoral fin on its neck and a dorsal fin on its back. It occurs on kelp-covered rocky reefs and grows to about 13.8″.

Artist’s notes:
The Leafy Sea Dragon was created in 2004 and the color added in 2007. I ended up drawing several of these animals for Becker&Mayer’s ‘Field Guide to Ocean Animals.’ They look like fantasy creatures to me – almost unreal and so fragile. I hope to be able to see them in the wild some day.
