Information about the Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish:
The Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish is a small marine fish native to the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific area from the eastern coast of Africa to Hawaii, Red Sea included, and is also found in the eastern Pacific Ocean from Baja California to the Revillagigedo Islands and the Galapagos. Adults usually grow to about 8.7 inches (22 cm) long. They areusually found in groups of about 5 fish. They usually stay close to rock formations and in and around coral reefs, where they feed on hydroids, smaller crustaceans, and other invertebrates. The black spot on the back of the fish is a false eye to possibly confuse predators. It is a very popular aquarium fish and does well in captivity.

Artist’s notes:
The Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish was completed on 1.23.2014. I had, for many months, been putting together a collection of marine life native to the coral reefs of Hawaii. Because of some bad information and due to some carelessness on my part – twice – I mistakenly placed fish in the collage that aren’t actually native. With help from Barry Fackler (who also took the photo this drawing is based on) I corrected the mistakes and removed the non-native animals from the collage.
