Information about the Black-Headed Grosbeak:

The Black-Headed Grosbeak is a North American songbird and member of the family Cardinalidae – which are the cardinals. These are birds that migrate, from their nesting areas from much of the western US and southwestern Canada down to central Mexico. It grows to be about 6.5 to 7.75 inches long (18-19 cm.) While sometimes seen in urban areas and backyards these birds are more commonly associated with deciduous and mixed wooded areas, usually with large trees and thick bushes. They are omnivorous, feeding on various plant matter such as seeds, berries fruit as well as insects and small invertebrates. They are one of the few birds that can safely digest the poisonous Monarch Butterfly.

Artist’s notes:

The Black-Headed Grosbeak was completed on 10.30.2013. I’ve started putting together a collection of various species of backyard birds one might encounter in the San Francisco Bay area. I wanted to expand beyond the very commonly encountered birds – robins, doves, etc) and include some species that – while not often seen – are still native to the area and species that would be more on the special side to see. The drawing is based on a photo by Luis Villablanca and was used with his permission.
